What does this Course lead to?
This course could lead to reading Criminology, Psychology or Sociology at university as well as being useful for other subjects such as business, sports science, law, teaching and English, to name a few.
What will I study
Year 12
Criminology focuses on the changing awareness of crime and criminological theories- looking at how different crimes are portrayed in the media and attempts to explain criminal behaviour.
Year 13
Criminology focuses on the legal system in more depth; how crimes are punished and what happens inside a courtroom.
What are the benefits of studying this course and what will I gain from it?
Criminology is an exciting new subject where students explore the legal, psychological and sociological aspects of criminal behaviour and the legal system. Students will develop analytical skills alongside gaining greater confidence in both research and presentation techniques.
How will I be assessed
Assessment is by both examination and controlled assessment. There are four modules- two examinations and two controlled assessments. One examination and one controlled assessment is carried out in Year 12 and one examination and one controlled assessment is carried out in Year 13. Each module is equally weighted at 25%.
Students can opt for the Level 3 Certificate which is one examination and one controlled assessment carried out in Year 12 and each module is equally weighted at 50%. This could be a good option for students who are taking three other subjects but want to gain another qualification.
